What is Harrar Murabba (ہرڑ کا مربہ)?

Harrar Murabba (ہرڑ کا مربہ / Myrobalan Preserve) is a traditional sweet preserve made from hand‑picked organic myrobalan fruits (Terminalia chebula), slowly simmered in pure sugar syrup until the fruit becomes soft, translucent and deeply infused with whole spices like cardamom, cloves and sometimes saffron. The word “murabba” derives from the Arabic mirabba (مربى), meaning “jam” or “fruit preserve”.

In Pakistan, harrar murabba is universally known as Harar Murabba, Harad Murabba or simply Harar Ka Murabba. It is a staple in many households – especially during winter when fresh myrobalan is at its peak – and is enjoyed as a dessert, a daily health tonic, or alongside parathas at breakfast. Nutritionally, 100g of harrar murabba provides approx. 204‑281 kcal, 48‑67g carbohydrates, 3‑4g dietary fibre, 28‑32 mg vitamin C, 12 mg iron, plus essential minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. The fruit is packed with tannins (chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid, corilagin, ellagic acid, gallic acid) and polyphenols, which are responsible for its potent antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory and antimicrobial activities.

Whether you live in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Rawalpindi or any other city in Pakistan, our premium harrar murabba delivers the authentic, homemade taste that generations of Pakistani families have cherished for its flavour and healing properties.

A Sweet Journey From Ancient Persia to Your Table

The roots of murabba trace back to ancient Persia, where Arab merchants discovered the art of preserving fruits in sugar to ensure longevity. The initial term was ‘anbijat’, later evolving into ‘murabba’. The Mughals brought this art to the Indian subcontinent, refining it into a royal delicacy. Harrar murabba has been cherished for centuries, not only for its delightful taste but also for its remarkable health benefits, and it is deeply embedded in Ayurvedic and Unani traditions as a tonic for general well‑being – commonly given to children and elders to improve digestion, increase appetite, regain strength after illness, and as a daily rejuvenative (rasayana). The ancient preparation was especially important because it allowed families to preserve the abundance of winter myrobalan and enjoy its nutritional benefits long after the season had passed.

Today, Pakistan is one of the largest producers and consumers of murabbas, with apple, carrot, amla and harrar murabbas being particularly popular. Spices.pk is proud to bring this historically revered, scientifically validated preserve to your table in its purest, most authentic form.

📜Science‑Backed Health Benefits of Harrar Murabba (Myrobalan / Harad Murabba)
Modern research confirms what ancient Ayurvedic, Unani, Tibetan and Homeopathic medicine has known for millennia. Terminalia chebula is regarded as the “mother of medicines” in Ayurveda (as Abhaya – “that which makes everything safe”) and the “king of medicine” in Tibetan and Bhutanese medicine. It is rich in vitamin C, iron, tannins (chebulagic acid, chebulinic acid, corilagin, ellagic acid, gallic acid) and polyphenols, contributing to antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, antimicrobial, hepato‑protective, cardio‑protective, immunomodulatory, laxative and rejuvenative activities.
📌DIGESTIVE HEALTH, CONSTIPATION RELIEF & DETOXIFICATION
Harrar murabba is a rich source of dietary fibre and natural laxative compounds. It helps regulate bowel motions, relieves chronic constipation and keeps the stomach cool. It is effective for indigestion, flatulence, gastritis, and is traditionally used as a mild purgative. The fruit stimulates gastric juice production, addressing bloating and acid reflux. Additionally, it acts as a natural detoxifier (Rasayana), helping to cleanse the body of accumulated toxins (Ama in Ayurveda).
📌IMMUNITY BOOST & ANTIOXIDANT POWERHOUSE
Myrobalan is one of the richest natural sources of vitamin C and tannin antioxidants. Systematic reviews and meta‑analyses have confirmed its potential for improving metabolic parameters and immune function. It exhibits potent antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal activities, making it a powerful ally during seasonal colds, flu and infections. The high tannin content also protects vitamin C from degradation, even during cooking.
📌HEART HEALTH, CHOLESTEROL & BLOOD PURIFICATION
Harrar murabba helps purify the blood, reduces total cholesterol and LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol levels, and improves overall lipid profile. The chromium content supports insulin sensitivity, which helps regulate blood glucose levels, making it beneficial for individuals with diabetes or prediabetes. For heart health, it acts as a natural cardiac tonic and blood purifier (Rakta Prasadaka).
📌SKIN CARE, HAIR HEALTH & ANTI‑AGEING
Myrobalan has emerged as a natural skincare secret, providing vitality to the skin, reducing wrinkles and combating blemishes by stimulating collagen production (thanks to vitamin C). The tannins help brighten the complexion, protect the skin from UV damage and environmental aggressors, and prevent premature greying of hair. It also supports strong, lustrous hair growth and is a trusted ingredient in many traditional hair oils and masks.
