What is Mustard Oil?

Mustard oil is a flavourful oil extracted from the seeds of the mustard plant, scientifically known as Brassica nigra or Brassica juncea, a member of the Brassicaceae family. Native to the Asian region, mustard has been cultivated for thousands of years and is valued worldwide for its culinary and cosmetic uses. In Pakistan, mustard oil is widely known as Sarson Ka Tel (سرسوں کا تیل) or Kadwa Tel (کڑوا تیل) due to its distinctive pungent flavour. The oil is rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats and naturally contains vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids. Whether you live in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad or any other city in Pakistan, our premium cold-pressed oil delivers optimal freshness and authentic flavour.

A Timeless Oil With Ancient Roots

Mustard oil has a rich history spanning thousands of years. It is one of the oldest recorded oils in human history. References to mustard and mustard oil can be found in ancient Sanskrit treatises dating back to 3300 BCE. Archaeological evidence suggests that mustard oil was used during the Indus Valley Civilization in the cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. In ancient Rome, mustard was used to make a fiery wine called "Mustum Ardens" – from which the English name "Mustard" is derived. In traditional South Asian cultural practices, mustard oil is prized for its warming nature and its role in regional cuisine and traditional wellness routines. Spices.pk is proud to bring this ancient, heritage oil to your home in its purest, most authentic form.

📜Traditional Cooking Oil
Mustard oil has been a staple in South Asian kitchens for centuries. It contains naturally occurring monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and is free from cholesterol. Its distinctive pungent flavour and high smoke point make it a popular choice for sautéing, stir-frying, and traditional Pakistani and Indian cooking.

How to Use (Traditional Pakistani Kitchen & Beauty Tips)

🍳
Traditional Cooking: Use mustard oil for sautéing, stir-frying, and deep-frying. Its high smoke point makes it ideal for Pakistani and South Asian cooking. Add to curries, daals, and sabzi for an authentic, pungent flavour.
🥒
Pickling & Preserving: Mustard oil is traditionally used as a preservative in pickles (achaar) in many South Asian households, adding authentic flavour to preserved vegetables.
💇
Traditional Hair Care: Warm a small amount of mustard oil and massage it into your scalp as part of a traditional hair care routine. This practice has been used in South Asian households for generations.
💆
Traditional Skin & Massage Oil: Mustard oil is used in traditional massage practices and as a moisturiser in many households. Mix with besan (gram flour) and yogurt for a traditional face mask used in beauty rituals.
🧊
Storage: Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For humid cities like Karachi or Lahore, store in the refrigerator to preserve maximum freshness and extend shelf life.

📦 Can I buy spices in bulk or wholesale?
Yes! We supply hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and online resellers. For wholesale pricing on 1kg, 5kg, or 25kg packs, email us at contact@spices.pk or use our contact form. We also offer custom private labelling.
🌟 What makes your spices different from local market spices?
Most local market spices contain fillers or artificial colours. We provide single‑origin, lab‑tested spices with full traceability. Our Red Chilli Powder is 100% pure without brick powder or dye. Our Cinnamon Sticks have high essential oil content – you can taste the difference.
🔒 Is your packaging resealable and hygienic?
Yes! All our spices come in food‑grade, BPA‑free stand‑up pouches with zip‑lock. This keeps your spices fresh for months and prevents spilling. The packaging also includes batch number, expiry date, and storage instructions.
🌍 Do you ship internationally?
Currently we ship only within Pakistan (including AJK and Gilgit‑Baltistan). We plan to launch international shipping soon. For international customers, please ask a friend/relative in Pakistan to order on your behalf.

🕌 Are your products Halal certified?
Yes – 100% Halal. We do not use any alcohol‑based processing, gelatin, or non‑halal ingredients. Many of our spices (e.g., Gond Katira, Kalonji) are used in traditional Islamic medicine. Halal certificate available on request.
🧴 How should I store spices to keep them fresh?
Store in a cool, dark, dry place (avoid above stove or near window). Keep the zip‑lock sealed. Whole spices last up to 2 years; ground spices best within 6‑8 months. Never use a wet spoon – moisture ruins them.
🍲 Do you sell whole spices, powders, or both?
We sell both! For each spice we usually offer whole, powder, and sometimes crushed/flakes. Check the product dropdown for options. Whole spices last longer; powders are more convenient.
